Every so often we should remember Cardiacs. Singer/songwriter Tim Smith is currently in a neurological rehabilitation clinic and will never play live again. ”At a sold-out gig at London’s Brixton Academy, the Ruts, fronted by US singer/actor Henry Rollins, ripped through razor-sharp songs such as Babylon’s Burning and Staring at the Rude Boys. It was an extraordinary occasion, not least because guitarist Paul Fox was as ill (with lung cancer) as any musician who has ever taken the stage; three months later he was dead. Although he was incredibly weak, something in him lit up in front of the raucous crowd that night and, one last time, he played the songs that had defined his life.”
